THE STORY BEHIND

Constantia Royale

Lynn Rowand is the current owner. Her father bought the farm in 1936 from the Bairnsfather Cloetes of Alphen.

The farm got split in two by the City of Cape Town when they built the M3 in the early 1960’s, and so Zonnestraal and Nova Zonnestraal were born. The first vintage of the Constantia Royale was in 2015, produced in the cellar facilities at Steenberg.

Originally the farm grew Hanepoort table grapes, but in 2002 a decision was taken to plant wine grapes. Initially Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Sauvignon Blanc were planted. The wine made from the Sauvignon Blanc grapes was soon sold out and it was decided to focus our energies and endeavours on this wine.

The Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot vines were replaced by new Sauvignon Blanc vines, along with some Semillon for possible future blending.
