ROGER BURTON

WHAT SKILL HAVE YOU ALWAYS WANTED TO DEVELOP?

Creative Writing, I want to write a book one day.

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE BEST WINES THAT YOU HAVE TASTED?

Can’t remember which wine it was but I tasted a Meursault in my twenties that literally blew me away. Otherwise I’m a sucker for Cab Franc or Grenache Blanc.

WHO IS YOUR WINEMAKING HERO, AND WHY?

Hermann Kirschbaum, he taught me most of what I know, especially about getting the basics right, and how to keep learning as you get older.

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR FUNNIEST MOMENT IN YOUR JOB?

Watching a friend at St Hallett (Australia) turn a full press upside down with the door open, and trying to get the grapes back in before getting busted by the winemaker!

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE THING ABOUT YOUR JOB?

Versatility, I love the farms and the people, and of course the wines!

WHAT IS YOUR DREAM HOLIDAY?

Getting shipwrecked on an uninhabited island with lots of fresh water and fish, ala Robinson Crusoe style.

WHAT WAS YOUR GREATEST MOMENT?

Finding God under the stars at Buitenverwachting, lying flat on my back in the carpark after a 22 hour shift. Crazy experience!

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE LOCAL RESTAURANT?

Foodbarn.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE FOOD MATCH TO THE CONSTANTIA ROYALE?

Seafood Pasta at Harbour House.

WHAT IS YOUR TIPPLE, WHEN NOT DRINKING WINE?

Beer and G&T (boring like me)

LOOKING BACK, WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR GREATEST CAREER HIGHLIGHT?

Getting a job in Constantia, the best grape valley!

WHAT IS THE SOUTH AFRICAN WINE THAT YOU ADMIRE MOST?

Vin de Constance.

WHAT ARE YOUR GUILTY PLEASURES?

Craft beer and cheesecake, in that order.  Plus I think A-HA is the best band ever.

WHAT IS YOUR BIGGEST CHALLENGE?

Keeping creative energy flowing with all the extra admin winemakers have these days.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE VARIETAL TO WORK WITH?

Sauvignon Blanc for its aromatics, and Chenin Blanc for it’s variety.
